    Seamless and easy sleep tracking

    Posted .

The Withings sleep mat is a great device that will help me monitor my habits a little better. I only have one problem that could be improved but otherwise, no issues and nearly a perfect product! Unboxing: Inside the box you will find simple documentation, the device, a power cable and power plug. Not much to talk about here. Product: The device itself is relatively small. It rolls out enough to fill about half of the bed (under the mattress). The cable is more than long enough to get to the nearest plug, even if it is a little bit away from the bed. The plug itself does not have a huge power adaptor if that is a concern. The product feels durable and high quality even though you are likely never to touch it again after installed. Install: Installation is done through the Withings Health Mate app. The app has a simple interface and provides relevant data from all the products you might own in the Withings ecosystem. To set it up, you go to the “devices” menu and click on “install a device”. You select your sleep mat and follow the prompts to connect it to your app. It is pretty hard to test until you go to sleep unless you have a nap planned. Use: Use is supposed to be seamless requiring no user interaction. You go to bed, then wake up and see your results! Stats that are tracked are duration, depth, regularity, interruptions, time to fall asleep, time to get up and creating disturbances. I was surprised the mat is sensitive enough to track your heart rate though the night (amazed actually as it tracks it though the bed)! It also tells you if you have any issues with snoring. All this data is compiled into a sleep score and allows you to see trends through the week and month. I have only had it for a few days at this point so have limited data history but it looks promising! Extras: I have not had a chance to play with the feature but the app / device is compatible with IFTT so if you have a routine set up with comparable devices, you can have it turn on music, lights, air conditioning, etc when you get out of or get into bed. Pretty cool if you are savvy! Cons: My only complaint on this product is that it can only track one person at a time as it is only large enough to stretch 1/2 the width of the bed. If you want to track your’s and your partners sleep, you will need two mats. In addition to this, if your spouse and you go to sleep at different times and one is prone to rolling around, it might track the wrong person’s sleep results. You can correct this in the app marking “it wasn’t me” but it is something to be mindful of. Summary: I find this device to be great in addition to a fitness device that does sleep tracking. That was my initial concern as it seemed slightly redundant. The advantages you get through this device are more consistent results / tracking, snoring tracking, and arguably better heart rate tracking in your sleep. If you do not like to fall asleep with a watch on this is a great option as well as it solves that issue by having a device you do not have to touch. Last, the integration with IFTT is the last great feature on this device as you can integrate your sleep into home automation.

    Great Product

    Posted .

I was excited to try the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat. I’ve suspected that my quality of sleep wasn’t that great, so I wanted to see if I was right. I was so excited, in fact, that I initially expected to be disappointed. I had a hard time opening the sleeve around the box, so I had to rip it off. This may be a theft-deterrent measure, but I’m not a fan of it. Customers shouldn’t have to fight the box to open it. The unit is quite simple. It comes with a mat, a charging cable (a USB cord attached to the mat), and USB receptacle to plug into the wall. At first, with this cable set up, I thought this was rechargeable and possibly I had to charge it first. I couldn’t find a reference to this, though, so I just plugged it in. The instructions are very simple. Almost too simple, perhaps. The booklet basically covers the installation of the mat and refers you to the app. You are supposed to place the mat under your mattress. I have an adjustable air mattress-style bed so I wasn’t sure if it would work placing it under the air bladder. So, I placed it under the foam topper that I have on my bed, so it was between the foam and the mattress. I got to bed late (this is normal for me). I expected to get about 4-5 hours of sleep. The mat, however, said that I only slept for one hour and 43 minutes. It said I had been interrupted twice (though I don’t remember anything waking me up), and very little deep sleep. It classified me as having a “restless night”. The next day, it did pick up my husband’s sleep as a “nap” (he works 3rd shift). While I could set up an additional profile in the app, I could not assign that sleep data to him. I couldn’t even set it up to a mat device at all. I was disappointed in this lack of feature. I’ve kept the data for now because my only other choice would be to delete it. Fortunately, this only happened once. I’ve been using it for six nights now. I find that I’m fascinated at what it picks up. Some nights, I’ve snored up to an hour per night. It breaks down how long it took me to get to sleep, when I slept lightly, when I’ve had deep sleep, and when I was in REM sleep. It does say that I’ve had several breathing disturbances during most nights. This is not a diagnostic device, so I don’t know what they are caused from; it doesn’t go into that level of detail. My husband has sleep apnea, so I am familiar with the condition. The app has some informational articles about apnea, such as a list of symptoms. It also explains what other conditions might be causing the issues. I find that this would be a good tool to share with my doctor when I see them next. I wish there was a way to export the data to share with my medical providers, but so far, I’ve not found that option. I would recommend that the manufacture consider adding that feature. Overall, I’m very impressed with this unit. I plan on using this every night from now on. I launch the app each morning when I wake up so the data transfers (via Bluetooth) and I can see my results. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in sleep tracking get this product. I can see it would be easy to pack and travel with as well. You can plug in your wrist tracker to charge and use this unit instead.

Best sleep tracker! Nothing bulky to wear!

    Posted .

So much better than wearing a watch! Tracks your different stages of sleep, heart rate throughout the night, if you snore and for how long, how long it takes to go to sleep, how long to get up, and ranks your sleep! Super easy to setup. Took only about 5 minutes! Just put under your mattress directly under where your chest is at night and plug it into an outlet. Install the app and it automatically detected the mat. (Note it goes through a calibration phase that takes about 10 mins at initial setup, but you don't need to wait for that - it'll do that on it's own.) That's it, then just sleep like normal! No bulky watches or straps to sleep with. I tried a few of the smart watches with HR monitoring that can also track your sleep, but I find them uncomfortable and they ended up waking me up when turning during the night etc. - kind of the opposite of what you're looking for! This is so much better. App is easy to use and gives you a great summary of your sleep and scores it based on a bunch of factors. You can even setup smart home functions with IFTTT (if this, then that) like turn down the thermostat when you get into bed.

Novel product but Metrics not very useful

    Posted .

Purpose: I typically sleep fine. My wife, on the other hand, does not. She tosses and turns, snores, and usually wakes up fatigued. She also refuses to believe me when I tell her she is snoring. She has a Fitbit to track heart rate. But it does not offer anything other beneficial metrics when it comes to sleep. Then, I caught wind of the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat. It monitors heart rate, sleep cycles, and snoring. Setup: The device is a small mat with an air bladder. The device unfolders and lays flat between the bottom of the mattress and the box spring. We have a temperpedic memory phone mattress. It is heavy and dense. We were afraid the device would not be able to measure anything through the material. I was afraid it would not be able to detect a heartbeat. It turns out that my worries were unjustified. More on that later. The device must be installed with the cable facing out. There is a microphone near the cable stem that allows the device to detect snoring. The cable is long enough to reach my closets wall outlet. I promptly downloaded the Health Mate app from the Apple store, created an account, and connected to the Sleep Mat. The Health Mate app immediately walked me through setup and calibration of the Sleep Mat. Calibration takes approximately ten minutes. At this point I left the cell phone, with the app active, on my bed and left the room. Ten minutes later the Sleep Mat was ready to go. Experience: Does it work? The Health Mate app does allow for the connection of other sources of metrics from other health tracking apps/devices such as a smart watch. Unfortunately, I did not see an option to integrate anything other than other Withings products. I would have liked to have integrated the data from a Fitbit or Apple Watch with the Sleep Mat’s data. My wife has a Fitbit that she uses to track steps and heart rate. We tested the Sleep Mat over the last week while she wore her Fitbit. We compared heart rate metrics from both apps. We found that the heart rate information matched closely between devices. However, the Health Mate graph does not to be a minute by minute chart like the Fitbit tracker is. I found gaps ranging from five to twelve minutes between readings. Is this correct? It may be the interface for the app is incapable of presenting granular information. I cannot believe the device is capture beats per minute using five to twelve minute intervals. I hope Withings fixes this in their app. We were able to match up a few times during her sleeping sessions. We found that the Sleep Mat and Fitbit data did match during their time periods within a beat or two. Data that my wife and I found interesting are the measurements for light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. This information is represented by a chart showing how intense each sleep cycle is and its duration. You How does it know? I wish there was a clearer explanation than the mat monitors heart rate, respiration rate, sleep cycle, and snoring. It also says it monitors sleep cycles but that seems to be a bucket statement for unspecified metrics that most likely include heart rate and respiration. Finally, my wife mentioned that the app did not capture the periods breaks in her sleep such as poddy breaks or letting the cat out at 4am. The app does report an unbroken night of sleep for 6, 7, 8 hours. It also gave her a sleep score of 90 or above for each night of sleep. The app does have some rudimentary information regarding what you need to know about sleep. There is zero information about how to interpret the metrics. I also found this disappointing. It makes the device and the metrics more novel than useful. There is a generic coaching portion to the app. The information is not personalized based on metrics. Final Thoughts: The device is simple to setup, calibrate, and collect metrics with. It will integrate with other Withings metric collection devices such as their watches. However, there is no education or guidance on how to interpret and then use the information. For example, if the pad detects that I am tossing and turning all night, then identify the pattern for and then give me some suggestions to reduce the activity? Is there an article about anxiety and anxiety relief that may reduce my restless sleeping sessions? Am I getting too much deep sleep? What should I know about sleeping too deeply for too long? Is it a problem? How about snoring four hours a night? There just seems to be a lot missing here that a data driven product should do but does not. I have the data. What is next? I do not feel like this product has an answer yet. Maybe the capabilities I would find most useful are not part of the mobile app yet. It would great if I could share more detailed data with my doctor while I am with my doctor. I can do that with a smartphone and a more robust mobile app. I like this product, I like the metrics, but I cannot see past the novelty.

No more silly watches to wear!

    Posted .

I liked my old fitbit that tracked my sleep but that means I had to constantly wear a device to monitor my sleep. This sleeping pad is a set-it-and-forget-it type of application. Automatic sleep tracking for folks like me who always forgets to set things before slumbering. Pros: • Nothing to wear! • Very insightful app that helps explains my sleep • Works with IFTTT app for cool automation Cons: • None! Get one and stop wearing silly watches to measure your sleep. Setup was a breeze. Take it out of the box and place it between your mattress and your mattress base. I was worried that it wouldn’t work with my foam mattress but it works like a charm. The sensors are so sensitive that it’s able to tell me about breathing disturbances, heart rate, and how restful your sleep was. Since the pad is only wide enough for one side of the mattress, the sleeping mat doesn’t register my wife’s movements on her side. The app is very robust and helps me explain why im feeling groggy or energetic the next morning. It scores you on duration, how much deep sleep vs light vs REM you had, and also if it sensed any breathing irregularities. It even keeps track on how often you snored too. A bonus feature besides measuring your sleep performance for data geeks like me is the IFTTT app integration. This means I can create a rule that if the sleep mat detects that im sleeping, the app will arm my Arlo cameras to record any motion I have in the garage, etc. So cool! If you’re a data geek or just curious on how well you’re sleeping through the night, this sleeping mat is for you!

A decent product to monitor sleep

    Posted .

I've been a fan of things that can help me understand my sleep. Since I have horrible sleep patterns and routines, I thought it would be a good way to again try to reel myself back into trying for a good night's sleep. My initial reaction was that the cord was too short to make it to an outlet, but I used an extension cord and that solved that without any issue. The other concern is that it seemed to be picking up my wife's sleep patterns and not always mine. I found this by sleeping in separate beds when I noticed the mixed results. I'm sure if I try long enough I might get the exact spot that it might not pick up my wife's sleep patterns and just mine, but it seems to much work to get that to happen. Once that was resolved, I can say with much certainty that this product works well to help you understand what you are doing in your sleep. I had been thinking of putting up a camera and see how much flipping and stuff, and if I could see if I was snoring (mouth open) but realized that is a bit difficult and I would not be happy seeing myself sleep. The information I got seems to concur with what I already believed was happening, with some surprises, like how many minutes it took me to wake up, and also sleep disturbances - I know this isn't a medical sleep study, but it gives you an idea of how things are going without doing an expensive sleep study. Would I recommend this? Yes, absolutely. Even if you need to sleep in a separate bed for a few nights to understand how your sleep is going, it would be worth it to figure out how to make your sleep time be more productive. I'm of the opinion that tools like this can really help get you back on track and try to make positive life changes to improve your life. Life is too short anyway, making the most of it and not feeling tired as often is the way to go! I'll be trying this with other family members in m house so they can understand their sleep issues - and maybe help get them on track while they are younger (20's). I would like a longer cord for a next gen product, and also a way to incorporate a mat that is for two people who share a bed, with their own stats, even if it meant wearing a bracelet or something that would tell the mat who was who and on which side of the bed.

    Effortless sleep tracking

    Posted .

I was scheduled for a home sleep study when I became aware of the Withings sleep tracking mat. No straps, no wires, no hassle. What??!!?? I cancelled the home sleep study. I had no clue if this would work as advertised and it's amazing, but it does! You simply place this mat between your box spring and mattress, about chest high, plug the USB cord connected to the mat into the adapter and plug it into an outlet. How could anything work when it's under the mattress? I still don't know how it works but it does somehow via the sensors in the sleep mat. Download their app, set it up on your WiFi and you're ready to go. There is NOTHING else to do. You simply go to sleep and get up in the morning. It knows what time you go to bed and tracks your sleep hours - it knows when you're in deep sleep, REM, or light sleep. It knows when you're awake, it knows when you snore - not your bed-mate, but you. Somehow it can distinguish between the two. And it also is aware of sleep disturbances. It then gathers this information in the app and the interface shows you how your sleep measures up. Did you snore? If so, it shows you how long you snored in total, what times the snoring occurred, and the duration of each episode. How often were you in deep sleep, REM, or light sleep, how long were you in each and at what times. It also tracks how long it takes you to fall asleep and how long it takes you to wake up. And there's even more... With daily weekly and monthly reports to view. It can sometimes take a bit of time for the data to transfer to the app. I got up about 3 hours before my wake up time to use the restroom one morning. When I got up for the day, I checked the app. It indicated that my sleep time stopped for the night at the time I used the restroom. About a1/2 hour later, I saw that it had added in the hours after I went back to bed, and showed the time I had left the bed as a disturbance. It just took a bit of time to update. I was impressed and I continue to be impressed. With no effort on my part, I am able to keep track of my sleep activity with the Withings sleep tracking mat. One thing... I'm not sure how long I will continue to find this information to be useful on a daily basis. If it stays relatively stable, I don't know that I would check it often... Perhaps monthly to see how I'm doing. Yes, I would recommend this to anyone wanting to track their sleep patterns.

Pretty insane sleep tracker. It knows alot.

    Posted .

The Withings Sleep Tracking mat is pretty crazy with how much it tracks. I have to admit I was skeptical at first, but once I used it, it made me want to put effort into getting a better night sleep. Ever hear people who say a health tracking watch makes them want to workout and stay healthy? The same applies for this. Background, I am a middle aged man who according to my wife snores loudly when I sleep. I figured the Sleep Tracking mat would be interesting to see what causes me to snore and how much it happens, as well as several other factors. The mat tracks the duration of your sleep, the depth (deep, rem and light), the regularity, interruptions (did you get up to use the bathroom or for anything else?), the time it takes for you to go to sleep, the time it takes for you to get up, breathing disturbances, heart rate and time spent snoring. It knows when you're awake and when you fall asleep. If you're paying attention you can see that's alot of info that is tracked from a small mat that you put under your mattress. How does it work? I don't know, maybe magic? I would guess the snoring part would be done by recording sounds in your bedroom which is weird but I'm pretty sure you can turn that part off. So what did I find? Lots of things but mainly I don't get to bed early enough and I don't snore as much as my wife says I do (although she's argued that the mat probably isn't working right lol). This thing works so well that me and my kid were laying on the bed last week and I dozed off while the kiddo was playing on my ipad. It tracked that as a nap (since I guess it was in the afternoon) and since we laid there for about 30 minutes it knew I was awake for 28 minutes and it knew I dozed off for 2 minutes. Mind blown. All in all I have found myself wanting to increase my overall score. My main problem is I get to bed too late so I don't get enough sleep. This device has me trying to get to bed earlier so I can bump my score up. It's also really interesting seeing all the stats, especially the heart rate and snoring.

I have been using the Withings Sleep tracking Mat for about 6 months now. It is very accurate and I have been using it to help track my sleep apnea. The mat is very informative and it ties right into Apple help. The app is very good. I use the mat along with several other apps. I am amazed that even though the mat is under the mattress it is very accurate in identifying when I lay down to sleep. It is nice not to have to remember to start the app in order for it to identify when I lay down for a nap or to sleep.

Excellent product. I have always liked Withings products. I just put it under the mattress and forget about it. The results are largely correct and in fact gives bit of boost. I used to think that I am not getting enough sleep and bought this. It has not been all bad per the app. Once you look at it at time to time, you can look for pattern which will nudge you to adjust the sleeping habits/time accordingly for better health.

Accurate, can differentiate between actual sleep and naps, tracks heart rate, after installed you have zero idea it’s there, software is well done, HomeKit savvy and its own Cloud service collates and tracks data from all of its devices. Waaaaay better than Apple’s half baked Beddit. I own both.

    Great detail!

    Posted .

My mom suffered from sleep apnea and had surgery years ago but I noticed that she seems to have some of the same symptoms (breathing disturbances throughout the night, increased snoring, sleeping for hours but waking up exhausted) so I thought this might give us a clue on how she’s really sleeping. This gives a ton of data on your sleep for the night. My suspicions about sleep disturbances were correct, even on nights where she got a good sleep score. We’re going to track a little longer to get more data and present it to her doctor to see if there is something we need to be concerned about. If you really want to know what’s going on while you’re sleeping (like how long you reach REM or deep sleep, how often you’re having any disturbances if at all, etc) then this is definitely worth checking out. The only bad thing we noticed is that it doesn’t seem to continue tracking if she gets up in the middle of the night and then goes back to bed. Not sure if this is normal but it was surprising because one of the nights that this happened meant that her sleep data wasn’t accurate for that night.

The sleep tracker is good. It detects snoring and calculate the sleep time pretty well. However, it doesn’t detect sleep apnea. Withings website claims that it can track sleep apnea but in actual it doesn’t. I called the customer care and they said that the sleep apnea detection is not available for US customers. I think they should clearly mention on website.

Most Convenient Way to Gather Sleep Data

    Posted .

I’m a person that likes data. I track every movie I watch, every book I read, etc. I already have the Withings smart scale so was excited to get this device. It’s a little mat that you place under your mattress and plug it into the wall next to the alarm clock. It was detected as soon as I opened the Health Mate app on my iPhone after which it went through a 10 minute setup period. As your sleeping it tracks what stage of sleep you are in: light, deep, or REM. It’ll also tell you if you woke up in the middle of the night. In the morning it gives you a “sleep score”, a number that is supposed to determine how restful your sleep was. It will also tell you how often you snored or if you had any breathing disturbances which can help to detect sleep apnea. Now, I sleep pretty soundly, pretty much passing out as soon as my head hits the pillow until mother nature comes calling in the morning. So I can’t really judge how accurate the different stages of sleep is. I just have no idea. What I’m more interested in is keeping track of my total sleep time and when I go to bed or wake up. So far, it seems that it is pretty accurate in those numbers. Oh yea, and it monitors your heart rate. At some point I may play around with some of the IFTTT features---wish I had a smart coffee maker. The best part about this device is it’s set it and forget it. Once it’s setup there’s literally nothing else you need to do but sleep normally. Nothing to wear on your wrist, don’t even really need your phone as it actually communicates over wifi. Thumbs up!

    What I've been looking for

    Posted .

I have been looking for something that would help me monitor my sleep patterns. Yes, my watch will do this however this is also the same time that I have it on the charger because the battery is at 10% by the end of the day. I was initially skeptical about how this would work and would it make my sleep uncomfortable. As it turns out, I don't even know it's there. It slides in between the mattress and the box-spring/foundation. For the record, I have a memory foam mattress and this works like a champ! Once you get it in place, plug in the included USB adapter and then go to your mobile device to download the app. Once the app is installed and the initial configuration is complete, it will let you know, the only thing you have to do now is go to sleep. I wake up the next morning and pull up the app and it shows me how long I've slept, my average depth of sleep; Deep, REM and light and how much I had of each. It also shows if you had any interruptions during the night, how many and when. It even has the ability to show how long it took you to fall asleep. And if you snore, guess what, it will let you know about that as well. I don't know how it does this but it is quite amazing! What I really love about this is once it is installed, I don't have to do anything except go t sleep! If only they could do something similar for exercise!

    Impressive

This sleep tracking device by Withings is very impressive. You simply lay it out under your mattress and then connect it via usb to a receptacle. Download the app and you will be walked through a connection process that is very easy to complete. Once connected you simply go to bed and the device calculates a series of informational data that is quite amazing. It tracks the various types of sleep stages and then calculates a nightly score. You can see on the hourly scale when you slept, when you were awake and the sleep stage you were in at a given time. Say goodbye to wearable sleep tracking devices. You may forget it is there because it is not intrusive. The data displayed on the app is very informative and can help you understand your sleep patterns and more. In addition to sleep functions the app is capable of doing much more. I am enjoying tracking my sleep patterns and data. The product quality is excellent. A terrific new addition to sleep research. Withings continues to make quality products.

I could not believe the accuracy. I have never slept well so for me it’s helpful to understand how I am sleeping and how I am feeling for the night or week, or even trending over time. The mat is easy to pair up with the app. I was done in less than 5 minutes. The dashboard is pretty informative.
