Ditch Cable and Keep Your Shows

Let's face it — no one likes the high cost of cable or satellite TV. You may pay a premium for five channels you enjoy and 200 you'll never watch. Luckily, there are an increasing number of options to get your favorite content without the costly cable subscription. Here are just a few ways you can ditch cable and still watch your favorite shows.

Streaming Options

As streaming services grow more mainstream, content gets better and better. The biggest and most obvious players in this category are Netflix, Hulu and Amazon video. Not only do these options feature a vast catalog of movies and TV shows, but they have started producing their own TV shows that rival or best the top-notch shows from regular cable networks. While these services require a subscription fee, it will most likely save you money compared to cable bills.

Aside from the big players, there are network specific apps and streaming services that grant specific content. HBO Now and Showtime Anytime offer services to gain access to their catalog of movies and TV shows. If sports are a big concern, then MLB.TV offer packages that are independent from cable subscriptions so you don't have to miss your favorite team. Additionally, Sling TV (more on that later), offers ESPN and ESPN2.

Live TV Alternatives

As of now, there is one main option for bundles of live channels outside of the big cable companies — Sling TV. Sling TV is a service that streams live content directly to your TV, computer, tablet or phone.

It's important to note that you'll need a streaming device or Smart TV to access most of the mentioned content. Smart TVs feature different apps depending on the TV and may require a bit of research. If you buy a separate streaming device, you may also be able to watch on a phone, tablet or laptop. You can check the compatibility of the service with devices with our streaming service guide below:

If you don't have a streaming device or Smart TV, HDTV Antennas are an easy and inexpensive way to access local channels in HD. If sports and news are your primary concern, then this may be the right option. Simply plug the antenna into your TV with a coaxial cable and adjust the antennas for a clear picture. You should be able to access the big four networks — CBS, ABC, FOX and NBC.
